Many American rappers have had run-ins with the law, but YNW Melly has been mired in vice more than any other:
the young man is accused of murdering two people and faces the death penalty. While YNW Melly remains in prison,
his track "Murder On My Mind," mistakenly perceived as a confession, is breaking all conceivable views and
streaming records.
YNW Melly's real name is Jamel Maurice Demons. He was born on May 1, 1999, in Gifford, Florida. The rapper's
unfortunate life story is partly the fault of his parents. Jamel never knew his father, and only remembers his
name—Jamie Demons. He ran away when his 14-year-old girlfriend, Donta Taylor, became pregnant.
Donta, a schoolgirl in her eighth grade, had no intention of having an abortion. At first, her mother helped
her, but then she had to raise Jamel alone. Donta worked at a Dunkin' Donuts to support herself and her son and
pay rent in Gifford's poorest neighborhood.
At 15, Jamel Demons joined the Bloods, one of the largest street rap groups. He distributed tracks on
SoundCloud. Later, the YNW (Young Nigga World) crew emerged. Besides Melly, it included Bortlen (Cortle Henry),
Sakchaser (Anthony Williams), and Juvy (Christopher Thomas Jr.). The guys were childhood friends. Together, they
wrote music and lyrics for future hits. In total, they accumulated about 500 tracks, which Jamel, for obvious
reasons, is not yet able to record.
Legal Issues and Incarceration
2015 Incident: Served time in juvenile detention for shooting at students near Vero Beach High School.
2018-2019 Charges: Arrested in February 2019 and charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the October
2018 deaths of friends Anthony Williams (YNW Sakchaser) and Christopher Thomas Jr. (YNW Juvy).
Trial Status: His 2023 trial ended in a mistrial; as of early 2026, he is awaiting a new trial and faces the
death penalty if convicted.
On May 15, 2019, a recording of a phone conversation appeared on YNW Melly's Instagram account, which his
manager manages during his absence, in which Demons says he will soon be released. This isn't the first
encouraging statement, but there's no indication that he will be acquitted.
